Here I am at Brian's former
childhood home in Childwall in Liverpool. Talking of walls there's....er...a
wall outside a pub a little further down from the house and you just have to
pull over and stand on it for a few minutes. A famous photograph was taken
there - a few Merseybeat musicians were assembled before they found resounding
success (see photos.)
The former Epstein home sits on Queen's Drive - ironic
as Brian's mum was nicknamed Queenie as she spoke with in a clear cut-glass
manor like the Queen. Running their own furniture and then musical instrument
business the Epstein's were a natural fit for this affluent area. It's
southeast of the city and borders some other well-kept, well-manicured districts
like Belle Vale, Broadgreen and Mossley Hill. Brian and his brother Clive lived
here with their mum and dad. Brian was 11 in 1945 when the family moved in.
Brian was known for being artistic and a smart dresser though brother Clive was
more staid. There was a large Jewish community and the Epstein's were sociable.
I found a photograph of the home from the fifties
and it hasn't changed (new windows.) Currently part of the brickwork on the front
wall is coming away. Though there's no plaque this home gets tens of thousands
of lenses pointed at it every year. As I took a few shots the packed Magical Mystery Tour bus slowed down,
the driver obviously pointing it out the home's importance in the Beatles story.
Though Queens Drive isn't far from Penny Lane it's a world apart from the
down-at-heel houses there the Fab Four lived. Presently these houses sell for £800,000.
Who lives here now? I wondered - still a Jewish family? Probably not as I read the
Jewish community has migrated to Allerton and Gateacre.
