Nora Batty's cottage, Holmfirth

Last of the Summer Wine was a sitcom filmed in Holmfirth in Yorkshire and there were 31 series. With 295 episodes it remains the longest-running TV comedy programme in Britain and the longest-running TV sitcom in the world. It ran from 1973 to 2010. Nearly all the actors have died. Every Wednesday evening on a walk with my friend Pumper we pass the grave of one of the main characters Kathy Staff (who played battleaxe Nora Batty) as she’s buried in the local cemetery.

While in Holmfirth you have to go and have a look at Nora Batty’s cottage where hundreds of short scenes were filmed. Nowadays it’s a self-catering holiday home (the website is www.nora-battys.co.uk if you’d like to stay.) It’s booked up for most of this year. Here I am on the steps where the harridan used to see off Compo with her jutting broom. The humble cottage was built in the late 18th century and is spread over three floors.
