Here I am outside the former
home of Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath. It's 3, Chalcot Square in Primrose Hill,
London. They moved into the unfurnished three-room flat on the top floor. They
lived here for about 18 months before moving down to their new home Devon.
While here Sylvia had her first volume of poetry
published (The Colossus), wrote The Bell Jar and gave birth to her first
child called Frieda. In 2000 Frieda returned with Nicholas Hughes to unveil the
blue plaque. Sylvia died round the corner at 23 Fitzroy Road but Frieda said of
number 3, ‘My mother died there ... but she had lived here’.
Nowadays
typical flats sell for £1 million and full houses for £6 - £7 million. Gulp.
Some shots of
the square itself...
