Even though Brian still lived
on Queens Drive with his parents he rented this ground floor flat for £16 per
month. He was in his twenties with a busy social life and needed privacy. Being
homosexual and Jewish meant he lead a fairly clandestine life and the flat was
used for liaisons away from his family. He was successful enough at NEMS to buy
the flat but perhaps - in his parents eyes - you officially left home once
married.
It's in the Canning area and in the sixties was a
bohemian area then packed with social clubs and restaurants. It's a short walk
to the art college and Cathedral and about ten minutes to Rodney Street where
Brian was born. After John and a pregnant Cynthia got
married Brian gave them unlimited use of the flat as a wedding present. They
lived here briefly.
