Brian Epstein signed the Beatles in January 1962 after seeing them at
The Cavern. Though he thought they had spark he wasn't impressed with their ramshackle
performances in black leather. He said he'd struggle to get them on at some venues
if they continued to look like Rockers/bikers (also if they continued to smoke,
swear and mess around on stage.) They'd never met a suave, middle-class gentleman
before and took his advice. A tailor made four suits which smartened them up
and gave a united look. About 7 weeks after being signed up the lads wore their
new suits for the first time on stage at a gig at The Odd Spot Club on Bold
Street Liverpool. Here I am outside the former premises as they look now.
The main
structure of the building hasn't changed much and it's been a cafe for many
years. In 1962 it was a small sweltering subterranean dive. A friend of Brian's
captured the gig with a new expensive camera that didn't require flashbulbs. However
Brian deemed the photos too dark and unsuitable for commercial use (thankfully
they weren't thrown away.) As the time the lads weren't well known outside
Merseyside and George was still a teenager. They only did one more gig here
five months later.
It was good to
see the place is a cafe and not a charity shop, vape
outlet or yet another Subway. I did a salute and left.
