Tony Hancock's former childhood home

Here I am on holiday in Bournemouth in June 2014. I came out of the rear of the hotel (The Heathlands.), turned left and here was this post-box red hotel (now called Hotel Celebrity - I’m not sure if they get many celebrities staying there.)

The comedic colossus was born in Birmingham but he moved here to Bournemouth aged three. After his father died he mother remarried and they lived in here in Durlston Court (now Hotel Celebrity.) At 18 he left home to join the RAF.

Hancock was an alcoholic and committed suicide (by overdose) in Sydney, Australia. Found by his side were an empty vodka bottle and amylo-barbitone tablets.

In one of his suicide notes he wrote: "Things just seemed to go too wrong too many times". His ashes were brought back to England and are buried in St. Dunstan’s Church in Cranford, London.
