Arthur was still working aged 66 when he suffered a stroke in his
dressing room at Birmingham's Alexandra Theatre. He died in hospital the
following morning; his wife wasn’t there as she thought he’d recover within a
few days.
He left £200,000 and a raft of tributes. For a few years he’d been
suffering from general poor health and alcoholism. Here I am at Sutton
Coldfield Crematorium where the service was held. Oddly his loving wife didn’t
attend – she was an atheist and believed when someone died they’d gone forever.
His ashes were sprinkled in section D1 behind the chapel. Here I am in that area.
I did a hearty salute and left.
