Here I am at the hospital where
Margot (real name Kathleen Mary Margaret Bryant) died. It’s a charming building
in attractive grounds so I'm surprised it hasn't been bought by a hotel group.
For sixteen years Margot was eccentric pensioner
Minnie Caldwell in Coronation Street.
She born on the other side of the country in Hull (her pop was a doctor.) The
family moved to London where Margot became interested in the theatre. She
appeared in various productions and musical comedies after making her debut in
a production of Aladdin. She even appeared in a couple of films (with Fred
Astaire and Oliver Reed) before landing the part of Minnie, debuting in the
second episode.
Aged 79 her memory started to suffer so much that
she had to leave Coronation Street
(in the soap she moved to Whaley Bridge with her gentleman companion Handel Gartside.) She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and admitted
to Cheadle Royal Hospital where she remained as an
in-patient till her death in 1988. Margot had never married or had children.
I've yet to find out where she's buried or scattered in the form of white ash.
