Woman Saving Kitten

You could tell me your mobile phone number but by the time I walked round a full-size snooker table I’d have forgotten it. I might have remembered it starts with “07…” but no more. However I can remember conversations, building layouts, shades, fabrics, buildings, faces, trees, body language, smile and emotions from decades ago.

One memory was made when I was about twelve years old. I was out riding my Raleigh Tomahawk (or Grifter) down Boyds Walk (back brake required due to a steep incline.) I stopped as I saw a woman stood on a rickety ladder in her nightie, dressing gown and fluffy slippers despite it being afternoon. She was reaching for a kitten cowing on a branch. I pass that same tree three times a week when jogging and always think of that scene from nearly four decades ago.

I’ve tried to recapture the moment here on a small canvas. I don’t normally use light pastel shades but on Sunday evenings I’d been watching The Durrells on television and just liked the starting sequence. The colours must have got stuck in my mind. I thought I’d paint a light evening sky and pink wall for some reason. The opening sequence is here…

This painting came together quickly, no big salvage jobs. I’m not sure what the farms and hills are in the distance if I’m honest. I got carried away and did too many.

The man’s face says it all…NOT impressed…

Sam doesn’t look too impressed so far…

Upon seeing the starting title sequence of The Durrells I decided to use some light pastel colours…

Pointing to the tree against which the ladder was lent in about 1978 (no fence there then)…
